The mission goes awry _ problems with the landing, problems with the drilling, problems with the nuke, problems with the escape. The final third of the movie plays out like a hybrid of Apollo 13, Independence Day and The Abyss _ except that all of those films were superior to Armageddon. Poor Tyler she gets the thankless job of fingering her engagement ring in the NASA control room while the two men she loves battle the lethal space rubble (and her real-life father and his band Aerosmith wail away on the soundtrack). Not much better are the ones where Harry and his daughter argue, conclude that she's a big girl now, and reconcile in time for the brave oilman to dash off and save the world. The scenes between Affleck and Tyler rank as some of the most cloying and syrupy in recent memory.
